Equality Florida congratulates both the
City of Lake Worth and Susan Stanton on her selection to fill the position of Lake Worth City Manager. Susan was selected for the job from a group of 50 candidates.
We're pleased that the City of Lake Worth values diversity and has hired Susan based solely on her qualifications for the job. That's fair and it's what every prospective employee deserves. We were proud to stand alongside Susan in 2007 and face down the extremely hostile anti-transgender bigotry that lead to her firing in Largo and we continue work hard across Florida to outlaw workplace discrimination.
Throughout most of Florida, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people can be fired simply for being who they are. Transgender people in particular face serious workplace discrimination. Equality Florida continues to work with Senator Deutch and Rep. Kelley Skidmore who are sponsoring bills that would create a statewide prohibition on the type of discrimination that cost Susan her job in Largo.
