The Lake Worth City Commission unanimously passed a resolution strongly opposing Florida's dangerous Amendment 2, the so-called "Marriage Protection" Amendment. Lake Worth City Commissioner Dave Vespo, who introduced the bill, was concerned that Amendment 2 might remove safeguards and eliminate benefits for families based on domestic partnerships:
Lake Worth provides health insurance for the domestic partners of city employees. Unless Florida voters defeat Amendment 2, health insurance and other benefits could be taken away from the families of our employees.
Lake Worth Mayor Jeff Clemens spelled out the fears of many in Florida over the vague language of Amendment 2:
No one really knows what the 'substantial equivalent' of marriage really is. If Amendment 2 is not defeated, our taxpayers may have to pay significant legal fees to find out.
Lake Worth joins the city of West Palm Beach, the Broward County Commission, the Broward County School Board, the City of Miami, the Florida AFL-CIO, Presidential Candidate Barack Obama, the League of Women Voters, the Broward League of Cities, Central Florida Labor Council, Florida Education Association (FEA), Florida Professional Firefighters, National Organization for Women, People for the American Way, and many more groups who have come out strongly against Amendment 2.

Thank goodness elected officials understand the dangerous implications of this amendment, and are alerting the voters.
