Another city has passed a resolution denouncing Amendment 2, Florida's so-called "Marriage Protection" Amendment. The mayor and city commission of West Palm Beach unanimously to oppose the dangerous amendment yesterday. Mayor Lois Frankel said:
West Palm Beach was the first city in Florida to provide domestic partner benefits for families of city employees. This policy has served our City well, without controversy or detriment. The passage of Amendment 2 would be a step backwards in the the advancement of the health and security of Florida's citizens.
The City of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County both have laws providing basic safeguards for domestic partners by establishing domestic partner registries- registries that are in danger because of the vague language of Amendment 2.
Commissioner Jeri Muoio, who introduced the resolution, had this to say about the vote:
Couples who have registered their domestic partnerships are treated in the same manner as spouses when it comes to hospital visitation and health care decisions. It would be wrong to take away these safeguards.
The city of West Palm Beach joins the Broward County Commission, the Broward County School Board, the City of Miami, the Florida AFL-CIO, Presidential Candidate Barack Obama, the League of Women Voters, the Broward League of Cities, Central Florida Labor Council, Florida Education Association (FEA), Florida Professional Firefighters, National Organization for Women, People for the American Way, and many more groups who have come out strongly against Amendment 2.
Many other municipalities, like my hometown of Oakland Park, are considering passing resolutions against Amendment 2 to make sure much needed benefits are not taken away from their residents.

I'm glad all these municipalities are coming out so strongly against Amendment 2. I hope our city of Oakland Park does the right thing and passes a resolution against it. Our residents can't afford to have their benefits and rights taken away- especially in these tough times.
