Broward County School Board Votes to Oppose Amendment 2

The Broward School Board on Tuesday voted unanimously to oppose Florida's Amendment 2, a proposed constitutional amendment that seeks to not only ban same-sex marriage, but also roll back domestic partnerships and benefits. The board said they were concerned that the amendment would mean losing employees or getting slapped with lawsuits, something they were unwilling to do as Florida's faces a huge shortage of educators.
Board member Jennifer Gottlieb, who brought the issue to the board, said:
It's just the right thing to do.
According to the Miami Herald, about 215 people who work for the school system use domestic partnership benefits, out of around 36,000 employees. ''It's really important that we maintain those rights,'' Gottlieb said.
Also cited as a concern was the amendment's massive intrusion into people's private lives. Chairwoman Robin Bartleman said :
I don't believe it belongs in the Constitution. It's nobody's business if somebody wants to enter a domestic partnership.
The Broward County Commission, as well as the Broward League of Cities, passed a similar resolution opposing the amendment.
