The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida (GLCC) is moving to a new multimillion-dollar, six-acre location in Wilton Manors. The Campus, which will have a waterfront view, is more than twice the size of the current location in Fort Lauderdale.
Paul Hyman, executive director of the GLCC, hopes the new home for the Center will rech beyond just the LGBT community.
Sexual orientation and gender identity are relevant issues for every human on this planet. We want this new campus to be a resource of not only the [gay] community, but an environment of safety and fairness for all people.
The new campus will be home to a vast array of resources- including a cybercafe, HIV counseling center, methamphetamine treatment center, theater and conference center and a catering. There will also be a large area outdoors where memorial services and weddings could be held along the Middle River riverfront in the future. There will also be a church -- Church of the Holy SpiritSong, as well as other religious groups.
The campus was purchased for $4.75 million and the first phase of renovations are expected to take about nine months.
The new location will be at 2040 North Dixie Hwy.
Congratulations to the GLCC! They do amazing work for LGBT people in South Florida and I'm sure this new home with expanded resources will truly strengthen our growing community!
