Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama opposes Amendment 2, the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment, his campaign told Florida Red and Blue, the bipartisan statewide organization fighting Amendment 2 through the Say No 2 campaign.
In opposing Amendment 2, Senator Obama joins more than 200 Florida leaders who oppose the amendment, including six members of Congress, Florida CFO Alex Sink, the League of Women Voters, the NAACP and the Florida Education Association.
The same cannot be said for McCain, however. Senator McCain did support and campaign for a 2006 amendment in Arizona that is similar to Florida Amendment 2 in that it would have banned workplace and other benefits for unmarried couples. The Arizona amendment is the only one in the nation to be rejected by voters.
