The Florida AFL-CIO, one of the largest membership organizations in Florida, opposes Amendment 2, the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment.
The Florida AFL-CIO represents 500,000 workers, retirees and their families in aproximately 500 local labor unions and labor councils. The vote to oppose Amendment 2 came Sunday, June 22, after a presentation on the dangers of Amendment 2 by Florida Red and Blue campaign manager Derek Newton.
The consequences of Amendment 2 are clear: it would limit the rights of unmarried, committed adults involved in domestic partnerships, and could eliminate their ability to share health care and pension benefits.
"Florida 's families would be hurt in significant ways if Amendment 2 passes," said Cynthia Hall, president of the Florida AFL-CIO. "The AFL-CIO and our members support benefits for workers and retirees so we can't stand by and watch these benefits be threatened by Amendment 2."
Michigan's Supreme Court ruled last month that a similar amendment passed there in 2004 prohibits public employers such as universities and cities from extending benefits to domestic partners.
In opposing Amendment 2, the AFL-CIO joins more than 200 Florida leaders who oppose the amendment, including six members of Congress, Florida CFO Alex Sink, the League of Women Voters, the NAACP and the Florida Professional Firefighters.

Fabulous news! I don't know any other group that represents the common man as much as the unions. They are overwhelmingly pro-gay 99.9% of the time. When will the right wing figure this out?
